Our History

Building Stone is a premier natural stone production and masonry company headquartered in Oxfordshire. We have been producing high-quality stone and masonry products for over a quarter of a century. Building Stone is the processing and stone masonry arm of the highly-regarded Johnston Quarry Group, run by experienced and highly skilled design and processing teams.

The Johnston Quarry Group was formed in 2007 by Nicholas Johnston, initially to extract the ironstone block from the Great Tew Estate, near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire. Ironstone has been quarried in the local area since Roman times. The Johnston Quarry Group then went on to acquire other quarries throughout the Cotswolds including Oathill in Gloucestershire and Sarsden in Oxfordshire.

In 2017, the Johnston Quarry Group acquired the Bath Stone Group as well as the underground quarries of Hanson Bath and Portland, producing the finely grained premier Bath Stone, to merge and form the Bath Stone Group.

More recently in 2019, the Johnston Quarry Group brought Guiting quarry in Gloucestershire back into production. This 40 acre site with its reserves of 2.5 million tonnes of beautiful Cotswold Gold and Cotswold Cream stone will supply the local and national building industry for decades to come.

Furthermore, with the addition of Flick Quarry in the Cotswolds extracting the well-known Cotswold walling stone, as well as a new processing plant.

Hartham Park underground quarry in Wiltshire, Johnston Quarry Group continues to flourish and grow.

With the in-house processing facility located at Great Tew and Hornton Grounds Processing Plant located near Banbury, in 2020 the Johnston Quarry Group added the well known processing company Stanley’s Quarry, based at Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire to its portfolio of masonry and building stone processing sites thereby strengthening the Johnston Quarry Groups ability to meet the current demand from developers and house builders for finished natural stone products.

With significant and ongoing investment in our machinery and production processes, including new automatic sawing, five axis profiling and milling, as well as a tumbling line, we have increased production and supply to meet greater demand from both new and loyal customers. A new Fantini JCB Chainsaw will also bring additional benefits, supplying sawn two sides limestone block into the processing works to assist with production and help minimise transport of waste minerals between our sites.

Planning is currently in place to add a further three sites to the processing division to help strengthen our position in the marketplace further.
